The A40 forms part of the Welsh Government’s East to West network of trunk roads, and runs predominantly through the central regions of Wales, linking Abergavenny in Monmouthshire with Fishguard in Pembrokeshire. The section in North and Mid Wales area is 58km (36miles) in length.
The A40 carries significant levels of tourist traffic during the summer period and some commuter traffic in localised areas. It also provides a corridor for public transport, serving the surrounding towns and villages, rural businesses, schools and leisure activities.
The A40 corridor is predominantly single carriageway standard throughout.
